HARMFUL CHEMICALS IN TEXTILES It should be no surprise to anyone that our environment is becoming increasingly polluted with chemicals. In fact, there are approximately 100,000 chemicals being produced around the world now and 1.500 new chemicals being developed every year. Amazingly, virtually none of these have comprehensive research on them to demonstrate whether they are safe or not. This extraordinary situation is only being addressed now and only to any reasonable degree in Europe. The Europeans have realised the danger and have started to test 10,000 of these chemicals to find out what effects they are having on humans. The real concern for us all now is that thousands of these chemicals are in our homes and are affecting our health. They are known to affect out brain and nervous system, immune system, energy producing cycles within our cells. In fact, every part of us can be affected and we simply do not know how just yet. What we do know is that our living environments are full of these chemicals and it is essential for our health to reduce these where we can. The place where you spend the most of your time – at home- is our biggest concern. We spend 1/3 of our lives asleep. Laying on our beds and wrapped in our bedding. Most people would be horrified to know what chemicals are in textiles and used to make mattresses. Table 1 lists some of the types of chemicals that are hidden in your bed that are having unknown effects on our families. Children are at special risk because they are 10 to 100 times more sensitive to chemicals than adults due to their fast metabolism and immature detoxification systems. Table 2 is just some of the symptoms clearly identified to be caused by the chemicals in our beds and bedding.
Fortunately, there is a European association that tests textiles for toxic chemicals. They check that they are not present or at very low levels in the clothes, bedding and other textiles we buy. This association is called Oeko-Tex, but only European goods that have low toxicity are currently certified. Look for the logo in table 3 whenever you buy textiles. There are not many available just yet, but this will change. You can, however, get Oeko-Tex certified bedding. This is exclusively available from Wenatex. Your Health Care Practitioner has recommended this bedding for you because of its safety and very hight quality. You will be invited to view a demonstration of the Wenatex Sleep System to give you the opportunity to improve your sleep and to eliminate a major source of chemicals in your environment. Please take the time to attend this free presentation to learn more about your home environment and your health.
