Lymphatic Drainage

Development of Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage was first developed and used in the 1930’s by Dr Emil Vodder and his wife in Europe.  He took the physical therapies developed by Winiwarter (1892) and developed specialised techniques for lymphatic drainage that are still used today.  Because Vodder’s lymphatic drainage technique was never designed to treat lymphoedema and transfer lymph some medical circles deemed his treatment unnecessary.

Around 1970 Foldi in Germany set out clearly that the principles of oedema can only occur if the lymphatic system has failed.  He believes the methods used to treat lymphoedema can also be used to treat other oedemas.

The Vodder technique of lymphatic drainage was primarily designed to increase the flow of lymph through a normal lymphatic system

FUNCTION OF THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

This is a body system responsible for bringing back to the circulatory system the interstitial fluid that all the cells of the body are bathed in.

It also acts like the waste disposal system of the body with its specialised white blood cells (lymphocytes) and macrophages which deal effectively with invading bodies of foreign matter such as bacteria, viruses and cancer cells.

The Lymphatic System is often referred to as the waste disposal system of the body with its waste cleaning and nutrition collection functions.

After the blood stream, the second main way for the drainage of tissue fluids to occur is  via the Lymphatic System.  Lymph is a clear sticky fluid about the consistency of honey.  It contains lymphocytes (T-cells and B cells of the immune system) which circulate through the channels of the lymphatic system, namely the lymph capillaries, lymph vessels, lymph ducts, lymph nodes, carrying waste products away from all parts of the body for cleaning.

The Lymphatic  System is made up of:

  • Capilliaries
  • Vessels
  • Lymph Nodes
  • Lymphatic Organs:  Tonsils, Spleen & Thymus Gland, ...... and Bone Marrow (immune system)

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE IS GOOD FOR:

  • Sinus Problems
  • Detoxification e.g. after measles
  • M.E. or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (C.F.S.)
  • Acne
  • Asthma
  • After a Cold or Bout of Flu
  • During fasting or a cleansing diet
  • Releasing a habit e.g. smoking or drugs
  • Fluid Retention
  • Pre-menstrual tension (P.M.T.)
  • During menstruation
  • During pregnancy
  • Lumpy breasts
  • When Iris reading shows a lymphatic rosary

POSITIVE EFFECTS OF LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE:

  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Relaxes the body
  • Assists drainage of excess fluid
  • Assists immune system effectiveness
  • Softens scar tissue – more
